Early Life and Marriage
• Birth and Childhood: Born in 1386 in Roccaparena, Umbria, Italy, St. Rita was known for her deep faith from a young age.
• Marriage at 12: She was married to a violent and ill-tempered man at the age of 12. Despite his abusive nature, she remained devoted to her family and her faith.
• Forgiveness and Loss: After 18 years of marriage, her husband was murdered. Rita forgave his killers and prayed that her twin sons, who sought revenge, would also forgive. Her prayers were answered, and her sons died reconciled with God.
Call to Religious Life
• Becoming a Nun: After losing her family, Rita felt called to join the Augustinian convent in Cascia. Initially refused entry, she prayed for the intercession of Sts. Augustine, Mary Magdalene, and John the Baptist, and was eventually accepted.
• Life in the Convent: She spent the last 40 years of her life in prayer, mortification, and service to others.
Deep Union with Christ
• Stigmata-like Wound: For the last 15 years of her life, Rita bore a wound on her forehead, similar to a thorn from Christ’s crown, signifying her deep union with His suffering.
• Final Years and Death: Bedridden for the last four years of her life, she lived on almost nothing but the Eucharist. Rita died of tuberculosis on May 22, 1456, at the age of 70.
Canonization and Legacy
• Canonization: Rita was canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII.
• Patronage: She is the patron saint of impossible causes, sterility, abuse victims, loneliness, marriage difficulties, parenthood, widows, the sick, and bodily ills and wounds.
