Arrest and Martyrdom

Conflict with Thieves: Paul insisted that his fellow thieves share some of their loot with the poor, but they refused and turned him over to the authorities, accusing him of treason.

Interrogation and Faith: During interrogation, Paul denied the treason charges but affirmed his Christian faith and his repentance. He refused to renounce his faith despite torture.

Martyrdom: On May 28, 1859, Paul Hanh was beheaded in Saigon (modern-day Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, during the Christian persecutions under Emperor Tu-Duc.

Legacy and Canonization

Burial: His body was buried in the cemetery at Cho Quán, Gia Dinh, Vietnam.

Beatification and Canonization: St. Paul Hanh was beatified on May 2, 1909, by Pope Pius X and canonized on June 19, 1988, by Pope John Paul II.

Feast Day: His feast day is celebrated on May 28 and on November 24 as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam.
