Saint of the Day: June 12, 2024
St. John Gonzales de Castrillo, known as St. John of Sahagun, was born in Sahagun, Leon, Spain. From a young age, John was educated by the Benedictine monks of Fagondez monastery, demonstrating a deep commitment to his faith and education.
Early Life and Education
At the age of twenty, John received a canonry from the bishop of Burgos, despite already holding several benefices. He was ordained in 1445, but was troubled by the practice of pluralism within the Church. In response, he resigned all his benefices except that of St. Agatha in Burgos. Seeking to deepen his understanding of theology, he spent four years studying at the University of Salamanca and subsequently began his ministry as a preacher.
Ministry and Preaching
During the next decade, John gained a reputation as a powerful preacher and spiritual director. His sermons attracted many followers and he became known for his ability to guide souls towards spiritual growth. However, his life took a significant turn after he recovered from a serious operation. Feeling a deeper calling, John joined the Augustinian friars in 1463 and was professed the following year.
Augustinian Friar
As an Augustinian friar, John served as master of novices, definitor, and prior at Salamanca. His dedication to his faith and his community was evident in his daily life. He experienced visions and was renowned for his miracles. John was also gifted with the ability to read men’s souls, allowing him to provide profound spiritual guidance.
Denouncing Evil and Facing Persecution
John’s commitment to righteousness and justice led him to denounce evil in high places. His outspoken nature and fearless denunciations made him many enemies. Several attempts were made on his life due to his fearless preaching against corruption and immorality.
Martyrdom and Legacy
St. John of Sahagun’s life was cut short on June 11, 1479, reportedly poisoned by the mistress of a man he had convinced to leave her. His dedication to his faith, his courage in the face of persecution, and his ability to touch the souls of many left a lasting impact on the Church and its followers. St. John of Sahagun was canonized in 1690, and his feast day is celebrated on June 12th.
