Saint of the Day: June 15, 2024
Saint Germaine Cousin, a beacon of humility and faith, was born in 1579 in Pibrac, France. She endured a life of suffering and neglect but remained steadfast in her devotion to God, inspiring countless believers through her unwavering faith and miraculous acts.
Early Life and Hardships
Germaine was born to Laurent Cousin, a farm worker, and Marie Laroche. Her mother passed away when Germaine was an infant. Born with a deformed right arm and afflicted with scrofula, Germaine faced rejection and abuse from her step-family. Ignored by her father and tormented by her stepmother, Hortense, she was often forced to sleep in the stable or under the stairs, subsisting on scraps and enduring frequent beatings.
At the tender age of nine, Germaine was put to work as a shepherdess. Despite her harsh conditions, she devoted herself to prayer, often using a knotted string as a rosary. She never missed Mass, trusting her guardian angel to protect her flock during her absences. One miraculous account tells of Germaine crossing the raging Courbet River by walking on its waters to attend church.
Faith and Miracles
Germaine’s life was a testament to her deep faith and generosity. Despite her own poverty, she was always willing to help others, especially children, whom she taught catechism and shared her meager food with. The villagers often ridiculed her piety, calling her “the little bigot,” but Germaine remained undeterred.
One winter day, accused by her stepmother of stealing bread, Germaine opened her apron to reveal an outpouring of summer flowers, an obvious miracle that left her family and neighbors in awe. This event marked a turning point in how she was perceived; her holiness began to be recognized, and her parents invited her back into their home. However, Germaine chose to continue living as she always had, embracing her humble lifestyle.
Death and Canonization
In 1601, at the age of 22, Germaine was found dead on her straw pallet under the stairs. She was buried in the Church of Pibrac, opposite the pulpit. In 1644, her body was accidentally exhumed during renovations and found to be incorrupt. Even after her casket was desecrated during the French Revolution, her body remained remarkably preserved, a testament to her sanctity.
Over 400 miracles and extraordinary graces have been attributed to Saint Germaine’s intercession, including numerous cures and the multiplication of food for the distressed community of the Good Shepherd at Bourges in 1845.

Saint Germaine Cousin’s life is celebrated for her simple yet profound faith, her unwavering trust in God, and her miraculous intercessions. Her feast day is June 15. Canonized by Pope Pius IX in 1867, she remains an enduring symbol of humility, faith, and divine grace.
