Saint of the Day: June 21, 2024
Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, born on March 9, 1568, in Castiglione, Italy, is renowned for his remarkable piety and dedication to a life of religious devotion from a very young age. His feast day is celebrated on June 21st.
Early Life and Devotion
Aloysius was born into a noble family, destined for a career in the military, following in the footsteps of his father, who served King Philip II of Spain. However, Aloysius displayed an extraordinary inclination towards spiritual life even as a child. His first spoken words were the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, signifying his deep-seated devotion from infancy. By the age of nine, Aloysius had already made a vow of perpetual virginity, determined to dedicate his life entirely to God.
Commitment to Religious Life
To safeguard his vow and avoid temptations, Aloysius practiced extreme modesty, often keeping his eyes downcast in the presence of women. His devout life was further nurtured by St. Charles Borromeo, who gave him his first Holy Communion. A kidney disease temporarily restricted Aloysius from participating in social activities, allowing him more time for prayer and studying the lives of saints, which deepened his spiritual resolve.
Despite being appointed as a page in the Spanish court, Aloysius maintained his rigorous devotions and austere lifestyle. His determination to join the Jesuit order faced strong opposition from his father, who had high aspirations for his son’s secular success. However, Aloysius’s unwavering commitment eventually persuaded his father, and at the age of 18, he was permitted to join the Jesuits.
Service and Martyrdom
In the Jesuit novitiate, Aloysius’s life was characterized by profound humility, rigorous asceticism, and a deep love for the poor. He taught catechism to the underprivileged and immersed himself in serving others. His calling to serve reached its pinnacle during the plague of 1587 in Milan. Aloysius volunteered to care for the sick and dying, exposing himself to the disease. Despite his frail health, his compassion and dedication were unwavering.
Aloysius contracted the plague while serving in the hospital and succumbed to the illness on June 21, 1591, at the age of 23. His final words were the Holy Name of Jesus, reflecting the profound love and faith that defined his life. Saint Robert Bellarmine, who administered his last rites, later wrote the biography of this young saint, capturing the essence of his virtuous life.
