Saint Joseph Cafasso was born on January 15, 1811, in Castelnuovo d’Asti in the Piedmont region of Italy, to humble peasant parents. His life, dedicated to faith and service, exemplifies deep spiritual commitment and compassionate outreach.

Early Life and Education

Joseph demonstrated an early devotion to his faith. Despite suffering from a deformed spine, he pursued his religious education with determination. He studied at the seminary in Turin, where he was ordained a priest in 1833. Continuing his theological education at both the seminary and university in Turin, Joseph eventually joined the Institute of St. Francis.

Teaching and Advocacy

Joseph became a brilliant lecturer in moral theology at the Institute of St. Francis, despite his physical challenges. He gained popularity as a teacher and was known for his opposition to Jansenism and state interference in Church matters. In 1848, he succeeded Luigi Guala as rector of the Institute, where he impressed young priests with his holiness, discipline, and high standards.

Confessor and Spiritual Advisor

As a sought-after confessor and spiritual advisor, Joseph had a profound impact on many, including prisoners and young priests. He worked tirelessly to improve the dire conditions of prisoners and ministered to them with compassion. His dedication to this marginalized group earned him the title “Priest of the Gallows.”

Relationship with Don Bosco

In 1827, Joseph met Don Bosco, who would become a close friend and spiritual partner. Through Joseph’s encouragement and guidance, Don Bosco discerned his vocation to work with boys. Joseph became Don Bosco’s spiritual advisor and helped him in his foundation of the Salesian Society. He also convinced others to fund and establish religious institutes and charitable organizations.

Legacy and Canonization

Joseph Cafasso died on June 23, 1860, in Turin. He was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947. His feast day is celebrated on June 23rd. Saint Joseph Cafasso is venerated as the patron saint of prisoners and spiritual directors, symbolizing the power of compassionate ministry and spiritual mentorship.
