Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 8:18-22
In Matthew’s Gospel, we find stories that remind us of the dedication needed to follow Jesus. These stories aren’t just ancient tales; they hold timeless lessons that we can apply to our own lives.
What Does It Mean to Truly Follow?
When someone excitedly tells Jesus, “I’ll follow you anywhere!”, Jesus responds by saying that even foxes and birds have homes, but he doesn’t. This reminds us that following Jesus might not always be easy or comfortable. It’s a call to be willing to let go of the things we think we need and trust in God’s provision.
Another person asks Jesus if he can wait to follow until after his father passes away. Jesus says, “Let the dead bury their own dead.” This might seem harsh, but Jesus is emphasizing that following him is urgent and important. It’s a reminder that we can’t put off our commitment to God because we never know what tomorrow will bring.
Putting God First
Both of these stories teach us that following Jesus means putting him first, even before our own desires or responsibilities. This doesn’t mean we abandon our loved ones, but it does mean that we prioritize our relationship with God above everything else.
In our own lives, this might look like:
- Choosing to spend time in prayer or reading the Bible instead of scrolling through social media.
- Helping someone in need, even when it’s inconvenient.
- Standing up for what we believe in, even when it’s unpopular.
A Journey of Faith
Following Jesus is a journey, not a destination. It’s a daily choice to trust in God, to love others, and to live a life that reflects our faith. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
Prayer:
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for calling us to follow you. Help us to be willing to let go of the things that hold us back and to trust in your plan for our lives. Give us the courage to put you first in everything we do.
Conclusion
As we reflect on these stories, let’s remember that following Jesus is a journey filled with both challenges and rewards. It’s a call to live a life that is different from the world around us, a life that is rooted in faith, hope, and love. May we all strive to be faithful followers of Jesus, trusting in His guidance and seeking His kingdom above all else.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
