St. Thomas: The Apostle of Faith

Saint of the Day

Saint of the Day: July 03, 2024

St. Thomas, known as “Doubting Thomas,” was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus. Though his birth and death dates are unknown, we celebrate his feast day on July 3. He is the patron saint of architects.

Early Life and Call

Born a Jew, Thomas was called to follow Jesus as one of His closest disciples. He showed great dedication and bravery, especially when urging the Apostles to join Jesus on a dangerous journey to visit Lazarus.

The Last Supper and Doubt

At the Last Supper, Thomas asked Jesus for clarity about His departure, leading to Jesus’s assurance that He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” After Jesus’s resurrection, Thomas doubted the other Apostles’ witness until Jesus appeared to him, inviting him to touch His wounds. Thomas then proclaimed, “My Lord and My God,” affirming his faith.

Missionary Work

After Pentecost, Thomas traveled to Parthia, Persia, and India to spread Christianity. He is credited with converting many to the faith, and the “Christians of St. Thomas” in India still honor his legacy.

Death and Relics

Thomas met a tragic end when accidentally struck by an arrow. His relics are now in India, Italy, and Greece, signifying his widespread influence.

Reflection

St. Thomas teaches us about the journey from doubt to faith. In our modern world, where we often seek immediate answers, his story reminds us to trust in Jesus’s love and guidance. Like Thomas, let’s be brave, curious, and steadfast in our faith, even when we face uncertainties.

May we always remember to proclaim with confidence, “My Lord and My God,” and let this faith bring peace and hope to our lives.
