Gospel Reflection for: July 05, 2024
Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:9-13
In the middle of a busy market in Capernaum, a tax collector named Matthew was hard at work. He wasn’t well-liked because of his job, seen as a collaborator with the oppressive Roman Empire. He was used to being shunned and looked down upon by his community. Yet, one day, as Jesus passed by, he looked at Matthew with eyes filled with compassion and uttered a simple invitation, “Follow me.”
A New Path
Matthew was astonished. He wasn’t a good guy, and he knew it. He was used to extorting money from his own people. But Jesus still wanted him to be his friend. Without hesitation, Matthew left his tax booth and everything he knew behind to follow this new path.
It’s like that moment when you’re scrolling through social media, feeling like an outcast, and someone you admire, someone you never thought would notice you, sends you a friend request. It’s a feeling of validation, of being seen and accepted for who you are, despite your flaws.
