Gospel Reflection for: July 11, 2024
Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:7-15
In a heart-to-heart with his twelve apostles, Jesus gave them some simple yet powerful advice as they set out to share his message of love and hope. It was like a coach giving his team a game plan, filled with tips on how to win and what to do when things get tough.
Spreading the Good News:
Jesus told his friends to tell everyone that God’s kingdom was near. It wasn’t just about talking, though; they were also supposed to heal the sick, help those who were struggling, and show God’s love in action. Think of it like posting a positive message on social media, volunteering at a local shelter, or just being kind to the cashier at the grocery store. It’s about showing people that God cares and wants to make things better.
Giving Freely:
Jesus reminded his friends that they had received their special abilities as a gift, so they should share them freely with others. It’s like when someone gives you a cool new app or a helpful tip – you want to pass it on to others, right? In the same way, we should use our talents and skills to help others without expecting anything in return. Maybe it’s tutoring a classmate, fixing a friend’s computer, or using your social media platform to raise awareness for a good cause.
Trusting in God:
Jesus told his friends not to worry about packing extra clothes or money for their journey. He wanted them to trust that God would provide for their needs through the kindness of others. It’s like going on a road trip with friends and trusting that everyone will pitch in for gas and snacks.
In our lives, this could mean trusting that God will provide for our basic needs, like food and shelter. It could also mean relying on the support of our friends and family when we’re going through a tough time. It’s about having faith that God will always be there for us, even when things get tough.
Offering Peace:
Jesus told his friends to offer peace to every house they entered. If the people welcomed them, they should leave their blessing of peace with them. But if they weren’t welcomed, they should move on and not hold any grudges. It’s like when you try to make friends with someone online, and they’re not interested. It’s okay to move on and find other people who are open to connecting.
Sometimes, our efforts to help others or share our faith won’t be appreciated. But Jesus reminds us not to take it personally. We should always offer peace and kindness, but we shouldn’t force it on anyone.
Knowing When to Move On:
If the apostles weren’t welcomed in a town, Jesus told them to shake the dust off their feet as they left. This was a symbolic gesture that meant they were leaving the responsibility for their rejection with the people of that town. It’s like when you unfollow or block someone on social media who’s constantly negative or spreading hate. You’re not being mean; you’re simply protecting your own peace of mind.
Sometimes, we need to know when to walk away from situations or relationships that are not healthy for us. It’s okay to set boundaries and protect ourselves from negativity.
A Prayer for Guidance:
Dear God,
Please guide us as we try to share your love and hope with others. Help us to trust in your provision, to give freely to others, and to offer peace wherever we go. Give us the wisdom to know when to move on from situations that are not healthy for us.
Amen.
Conclusion: Jesus’ Guide to Making a Difference
Jesus’ instructions to his apostles are just as relevant today as they were back then. They remind us that we all have a part to play in making the world a better place. Whether it’s through small acts of kindness, sharing our talents with others, or simply spreading a message of hope, we can all make a difference, one step at a time.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
