Gospel Reflection for: July 12, 2024
Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:16-23
In this passage, Jesus prepares his followers for the tough times they will face as they spread his teachings. He gives them advice on how to handle these challenges with both cleverness and honesty, promising them God’s help along the way. It’s like a coach giving a team a game plan for a tough match, assuring them of support and guidance.
Smart and Sincere:
Jesus tells his followers to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” This means being smart and strategic in a world that doesn’t always understand or accept them, while also staying true to their beliefs. Think of it like being a good chess player who always plays fair.
In real life, this could mean dealing with difficult people at work or standing up for your faith even when others disagree. It’s about finding a way to do what’s right without compromising your values.
Expect the Tough Times:
Jesus warns his followers that they will face challenges because of their beliefs. It’s like a weather forecast predicting a storm. It doesn’t mean we should give up, but it does mean we need to be prepared.
In today’s digital age, this could mean being ready to face criticism or even harassment online for your faith or values. It might involve being excluded from online groups or conversations because of your beliefs. It’s important to remember that Jesus promises to be with us, even when things get tough. We can find strength and support from online communities of fellow believers or through prayer and scripture.
Help from Above:
Jesus promises his followers that they won’t be alone when facing challenges. He says the Holy Spirit will give them the words to say. It’s like having a friend who always knows the right thing to say to cheer you up or give you advice.
When we face difficult situations, we can pray and ask God for guidance. He will give us the wisdom and strength we need to overcome any obstacle.
Don’t Give Up:
Jesus emphasizes the importance of perseverance. He says that those who keep going, even when it’s hard, will be rewarded. It’s like training for a marathon; it takes dedication and endurance, but the reward of crossing the finish line is worth it.
In our own lives, this could mean staying committed to our faith even when it’s unpopular on social media. It could mean continuing to speak out against injustice online, even when faced with opposition and backlash. It could also mean persevering through personal struggles and sharing our stories of faith and resilience online to inspire others.
A Prayer for Strength:
Dear God,
Please give us the wisdom to navigate life’s challenges, both online and offline, with both cleverness and honesty. Help us to stay true to our beliefs, even when it’s difficult. Fill us with your Spirit so that we may always speak your truth with confidence. Guide us to know when to persevere and when to move on.
Amen.
Conclusion: Facing Challenges with Faith
Following Jesus isn’t always easy, especially in the digital age where we’re constantly bombarded with information and opinions. But by following his advice, we can face these challenges with wisdom, courage, and grace. We can trust in God’s guidance and support, knowing that he is always with us, even in the toughest of times. Let us be wise in our online interactions, innocent in our intentions, and unwavering in our faith, knowing that God will give us the strength to overcome any obstacle.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
