The Cost of Following Jesus: Tough but Rewarding

Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:34-11:1

In this part of Matthew’s story, Jesus tells his followers that following him won’t always be easy. It might even cause some problems with their family and friends. But he also promises that the rewards of following him are worth it. It’s like when you decide to start a new diet or exercise routine – it takes effort and commitment, but the benefits to your health and well-being are worth it.

Tough Choices:

Jesus says, “I didn’t come to bring peace, but a sword.” This doesn’t mean he wants us to fight with each other. Instead, it means that following him can be hard, especially if our family or friends don’t understand or agree with our choices.

Think about it like this: Imagine you decide to quit a bad habit, like smoking or excessive drinking. Your friends might not understand and may even try to pressure you to continue. But if you truly believe it’s the right thing to do, you’ll stick to your decision, even if it causes some tension. That’s what Jesus means by taking up our “cross.” It’s about being willing to make sacrifices and face challenges for what we believe in.

Loyalty to Jesus First:

Jesus also says that loving him should come before loving our family and friends. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love our family, but it means that our relationship with Jesus should be our top priority.

It’s like choosing between two good things, like going to a party with your friends or staying home to study for an important test. Even though you love your friends, you know that studying is more important for your future. In the same way, loving Jesus means putting his teachings and values above everything else.

Finding True Life:

Jesus says that those who try to save their own lives will lose them, but those who are willing to give up their lives for him will find true life. This might sound confusing, but it’s like when you give up your time to help others – it might seem like you’re losing something, but in the end, you gain so much more.

Think of a single mother who works two jobs to provide for her children, or a person who sacrifices their free time to care for an elderly parent. They might be giving up their time and comfort, but they’re finding a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment in helping others. That’s the kind of “life” Jesus is talking about – a life filled with meaning, joy, and connection to God.

Welcome and Support:

Jesus also talks about the importance of welcoming and supporting those who follow him. He says that anyone who helps his disciples, even in a small way, will be rewarded. It’s like giving a thirsty person a cup of water – it might seem like a small gesture, but it can make a big difference.

In our lives, this could mean offering a kind word to someone who’s struggling, inviting a new person at church to sit with you, or donating to a charity that helps people in need. These small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, bringing joy and hope to others and ultimately bringing us closer to God.

A Prayer for Strength and Support:

Dear Jesus,

Please give us the courage to follow you, even when it’s hard. Help us to prioritize our relationship with you above everything else. And may we always be willing to open our hearts and homes to those who are serving you, just as you have welcomed us into your family.

Amen.

Conclusion: The Journey of Faith

Following Jesus is a journey filled with both challenges and rewards. It requires sacrifices and tough choices, but it also leads to a life of purpose, meaning, and joy. By prioritizing our relationship with Jesus, embracing selflessness, and supporting those who serve him, we can experience the fullness of life that he promises. It’s a journey worth taking, a journey that leads us closer to God and to a deeper understanding of his love for us.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
