Gospel Reflection for: July 23, 2024
Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 12:46-50 NRSVCE
In a busy moment, Jesus was teaching a crowd when his mother and brothers came to see him. They couldn’t get close because of all the people, so they sent someone to get him.
The Real Family:
Instead of rushing off to see them, Jesus pointed to the people listening to him and asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” He then said that his true family are those who follow God’s teachings. It’s like when you’re playing a game online with people from all over the world, and you feel a closer bond with them than with some of your real-life family members because you share a common passion.
This might seem strange at first, but Jesus is making an important point: family isn’t just about blood ties. It’s about a shared love and commitment to God. It’s like being part of a group online that supports each other, shares the same values, and lifts each other up.
Family of Faith:
Jesus called his disciples his “brothers” and “sisters,” showing that our relationship with God creates a new kind of family. It’s a family based on faith, not just genetics. It’s like finding a community online where you feel understood and accepted, a place where you can be yourself and share your faith without judgment.
This spiritual family is important because it can offer us support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. It’s a place where we can learn and grow together, pray for each other, and celebrate each other’s successes. It’s like having a group chat with friends who share your faith, a place where you can go for advice, encouragement, and prayer.
Doing What God Wants:
The most important thing about being part of Jesus’ family is doing what God wants us to do. It’s not just about saying we believe in God; it’s about living out our faith in our daily lives. It’s like joining a virtual volunteer group that helps people in need, or sharing positive messages of faith and hope on your social media accounts.
Doing what God wants means following his teachings, being kind to others, and helping those who are struggling. It’s about living a life that reflects God’s love and grace. It’s like creating content online that inspires and encourages others, or using your social media platform to advocate for justice and equality.
A Welcoming Family:
Jesus’ message is inclusive, meaning it’s for everyone who wants to follow God. It’s not about where you come from, what you look like, or what your past is like. It’s like a diverse online community where people from all backgrounds and cultures are welcomed and celebrated.
This is good news for us! It means that anyone can be part of Jesus’ family. All we have to do is say yes to his invitation and commit to following him. It’s like accepting a friend request from Jesus on social media, joining his online community, and becoming part of his worldwide family.
A Prayer for Belonging:
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for inviting us to be part of your family. Help us to live in a way that honors you and reflects your love to others. May our online and offline communities be a place of welcome, acceptance, and support for all who seek you.
Amen.
Conclusion: A Family Beyond Bloodlines
Jesus’ words challenge us to rethink our understanding of family. He shows us that true belonging comes from a shared faith and a commitment to God’s will. It’s about finding a community of believers who will support us, encourage us, and challenge us to grow in our faith. In the digital age, this spiritual family can be found both online and offline, connecting us with people from all over the world who share our love for Jesus. So, let us embrace this expanded definition of family and build communities that reflect God’s love and grace.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
