Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 20:20-28 NRSVCE

In this Bible story, the mother of two brothers, James and John, asked Jesus if they could have the best seats in heaven, sitting right next to him. She wanted her sons to be important and powerful. But Jesus used this moment to teach a valuable lesson about what it truly means to be great.

Misunderstanding “Greatness”:

The mother’s request shows us that sometimes we focus on the wrong things. We might think that being great means having lots of money, power, or fame. It’s like when we see celebrities on social media and think they have the perfect life. But Jesus shows us that true greatness isn’t about getting ahead of others or having the most followers. It’s about being humble and putting others first.

Think of it like this: Imagine a popular kid at school who uses their popularity to help others. They stick up for kids who are being bullied, help classmates with their homework, and make everyone feel included. That’s the kind of greatness Jesus is talking about – using your influence to make a positive impact on the world.

Being Willing to Sacrifice:

Jesus tells the brothers that if they want to be great, they need to be willing to suffer and sacrifice for others, just like he did. It’s like a firefighter who risks their life to save others from a burning building. They don’t do it for fame or recognition; they do it because it’s the right thing to do.

In our lives, we might be called to make sacrifices for our family, friends, or community. It could mean giving up our time to volunteer at a local charity, helping a friend in need, or standing up for what’s right even when it’s difficult. These sacrifices might not make us famous, but they make a real difference in the lives of others.

Leading by Serving:

Jesus teaches his disciples that the greatest among them should be like a servant. It’s like a boss who rolls up their sleeves and helps their employees with their tasks, or a parent who takes care of their children’s needs without expecting anything in return.

In today’s world, we can see this kind of servant leadership in people like healthcare workers who dedicate their lives to caring for others, teachers who inspire and educate their students, and community leaders who work tirelessly to improve the lives of those around them. True greatness comes from using our talents and abilities to serve others, not from seeking power or recognition for ourselves.

Following Jesus’ Example:

Jesus is the ultimate example of servant leadership. He didn’t come to earth to be served, but to serve others and give his life for us. It’s like a soldier who sacrifices their life to protect their country.

We can learn so much from Jesus’ example of humility, compassion, and selflessness. When we follow his lead, we discover that true greatness isn’t about what we have or achieve, but about how we love and serve others. It’s about putting others first and living a life that reflects God’s love for us.

A Prayer for Humility and Service:

Dear Jesus,

Help us to be like you, to put others first and to serve with humility and compassion. Show us how to use our gifts and talents to make a difference in the world. May our lives be a reflection of your love and grace.

Amen.

Conclusion: True Greatness Found in Serving Others

The story of James and John’s mother reminds us that true greatness is found in serving others, not in seeking power or recognition. By following Jesus’ example of humility, compassion, and selflessness, we can make a positive impact on the world and discover the true meaning of greatness.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
