Daily Gospel Reading: John 11:19-27 NRSVCE
In the Bible, we read about a woman named Martha who was heartbroken because her brother Lazarus had died. Many friends and family came to comfort her, showing us how important it is to support each other in times of sorrow. Today, we can offer this support in many ways, like sending a message to someone who is grieving, attending a funeral, or simply being present for a friend who needs to talk.
Martha Believes in Jesus:
Even though Martha was sad, she still believed in Jesus. She said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” It’s like when we pray to God during a difficult time, hoping for a miracle. Martha also believed that God would answer Jesus’ prayers. It shows us that even in the darkest of times, we can still hold onto our faith and trust in God’s power.
The Promise of Life After Death:
Jesus told Martha that her brother would come back to life. Martha thought he meant at the end of the world, but Jesus surprised her by saying, “I am the resurrection and the life.” This means that anyone who believes in Jesus will have eternal life, even after they die. It’s like the promise of a new beginning, a life beyond what we can imagine.
This gives us hope when we face death, whether it’s the loss of a loved one or the thought of our own mortality. We can find comfort in knowing that through Jesus, death is not the end, but a new beginning. We can share this hope with others by comforting them in their grief and reminding them of God’s promise of eternal life.
Belief in Jesus: The Key to Life:
Jesus asked Martha, “Do you believe this?” And she answered with a strong and clear “Yes, Lord!” This is a powerful moment because it shows us the importance of personal faith. It’s not enough to just know about Jesus; we need to believe in him with all our hearts.
In our lives, we can express our faith in many ways. We can pray, read the Bible, go to church, and talk to others about our beliefs. We can also show our faith through our actions, by loving others, forgiving those who hurt us, and living a life that reflects God’s values.
A Prayer for Hope and Faith:
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for the hope you give us in times of sorrow. Help us to trust in your power, even when things seem hopeless. Strengthen our faith and give us the courage to share your love with others who are grieving.
Amen.
Conclusion: Hope in the Midst of Sorrow
The story of Jesus and Martha reminds us that even in the midst of deep sorrow, there is always hope. Jesus offers us the promise of eternal life and the assurance that death is not the end. When we face loss and grief, we can turn to him for comfort, strength, and hope. We can also find solace in the support of our faith community and share the message of hope with others who are struggling.
Remember, even when things seem dark, Jesus is the light that shines through. He is the resurrection and the life, and through him, we can find hope and meaning even in the face of death.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
