Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 13:47-53 NRSVCE

In these two short stories, Jesus uses everyday images – a fishing net and a treasure box – to teach us important lessons about living a life that pleases God.

The Fishing Net:

Imagine you’re fishing with a big net, and you catch all sorts of fish, big and small, good and bad. When you pull the net in, you have to sort through the catch and keep only the good fish. This is like how God will separate the good people from the bad at the end of time.

In our lives, this means we need to be careful about the choices we make. Are we choosing to be kind, honest, and helpful? Or are we choosing to gossip, spread rumors, or hurt others? Just like the fishermen choose the good fish, we need to choose to do what is right. We can use the tools available to us, like online guides to recognizing fake news, to help us discern between truth and falsehood, between good and evil.

The Treasure Box:

Jesus also tells a story about a person who finds a treasure box full of old and new things. This person is wise because they know that both old and new things are valuable. It’s like when you look through old photos and videos online and find memories that are just as precious as the new ones you create today.

In our faith, we can learn from the wisdom of the Bible, which was written long ago, while also being open to new ways of understanding God’s message. It’s like reading a classic book and then discussing it with friends online, discovering new insights and interpretations.

Choosing Wisely and Being Ready:

Both stories teach us about the importance of making good choices and being prepared for what’s to come. Just like the fishermen need to know which fish to keep, we need to know what kind of life God wants us to live. And just like the person with the treasure box needs to know the value of both old and new things, we need to understand and appreciate both the old and new teachings in our faith.

In practical terms, this means we need to read the Bible, pray, and talk to trusted people about our faith. We also need to be aware of the challenges and temptations we face in the digital age, such as cyberbullying, fake news, and addiction to screens. By being prepared and making wise choices, we can live a life that honors God.

A Prayer for Guidance:

Dear God,

Please help us to make wise choices and to always choose what is right. Give us the wisdom to understand your word and to share it with others. Help us to be prepared for whatever the future holds, knowing that you are always with us.

Amen.

Conclusion: Living a Life That Matters

The stories of the fishing net and the treasure box remind us that our choices matter. They affect not only our lives now but also our eternal destiny. By choosing to follow Jesus, we can live a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling. We can make a difference in the world and leave a lasting legacy of love, kindness, and faith.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
