Gospel Reflection for: August 03, 2024
Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:1-12 NRSVCE
In the Bible, we read about John the Baptist, a brave man who spoke the truth even when it was dangerous. He criticized King Herod for marrying his brother’s wife, which was against God’s law. Think of it like someone speaking out against a powerful person or a company that is doing something wrong, even though they might get in trouble for it.
Standing Up for What’s Right:
John’s courage reminds us to speak up for what we believe in, even when it’s scary. In today’s world, this could mean standing up to a bully at school, reporting unethical behavior at work, or speaking out against injustice online. It’s about having the courage to do what’s right, even when it’s not popular.
The Dangers of Power and Fear:
King Herod didn’t like what John said. He was afraid of losing face in front of his friends and advisors. So, even though he knew John was right, he had him arrested and put in prison. It’s like when someone in power tries to silence someone who is speaking the truth because they’re afraid of the consequences.
This story reminds us that power can be dangerous when it’s misused. We need to be careful not to let our desire for popularity or success cloud our judgment or compromise our values. It’s important to listen to those who speak the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.
The Price of Following Jesus:
John’s story also shows us that following Jesus can come with a cost. Sometimes, standing up for what’s right can lead to persecution or even death. John was eventually beheaded because of his boldness. It’s like when someone is harassed or threatened online for expressing their beliefs.
This reminds us that following Jesus isn’t always easy. It takes courage and commitment. But even in the face of hardship, we can find strength in knowing that we are doing what’s right and that God is with us.
The Power of Manipulation:
Herod’s wife, Herodias, hated John and wanted him dead. She used her daughter to manipulate Herod into making a foolish promise. At her daughter’s birthday party, she had her daughter dance for Herod, and he was so pleased that he promised to give her anything she wanted. The daughter, prompted by her mother, asked for John’s head on a platter. Herod, even though he was sad, kept his promise and had John killed.
This story shows us the dangers of manipulation and the importance of being discerning. We need to be careful about who we listen to and whose advice we follow. We should always seek wisdom and guidance from God before making important decisions.
A Prayer for Courage and Integrity:
Dear God,
Please give us the courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. Help us to speak the truth with love and respect, and to resist the temptation to compromise our values. Protect us from those who would try to manipulate or harm us, and give us the strength to remain faithful to you, no matter the cost.
Amen.
Conclusion: Stand Strong in Your Faith
The story of John the Baptist reminds us that speaking the truth and standing up for what’s right is important, even when it’s difficult. We may face opposition or even persecution, but we can find strength in knowing that God is with us. By following Jesus’ example of courage and integrity, we can make a positive difference in the world and live a life that honors him.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
