Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21 NRSVCE

The story in Matthew 14:13-21 isn’t just about a picnic. It’s about how Jesus, moved by seeing people in need, did something amazing. This story teaches us about kindness, trust, and how God can do way more than we expect.

Kindness Makes a Difference:

Imagine this: Jesus, grieving a friend’s death, tries to find some quiet time. But people follow him, needing his help. Instead of turning them away, he heals their sicknesses. This shows us that even when we’re going through tough times, we can still be kind to others. Maybe it’s offering a listening ear to a friend who’s down, or volunteering at a soup kitchen. These small acts of kindness can have a huge impact.

Trusting When Things Seem Impossible:

Think about those times when you don’t have enough money for bills, or when a problem seems too big to solve. Jesus’ disciples felt that way when they saw thousands of hungry people and only a little food. But Jesus said, “Trust me.” And when they did, the food miraculously multiplied! This reminds us that even when we feel overwhelmed, God can step in and provide. It might not always be a miracle with food, but it could be an unexpected job offer, a helpful neighbor, or simply the strength to keep going.

We All Have a Part to Play:

Jesus could have magically fed the crowd by himself, but he chose to include his disciples. He had them hand out the food, making them part of the miracle. This is like our lives today – we all have gifts and talents we can use to help others. Maybe you’re good at baking and can make cookies for a fundraiser, or you’re a great listener who can comfort someone going through a rough patch. When we use our skills to serve others, we become part of God’s bigger plan.

God’s Generosity Knows No Bounds:

The story doesn’t end with everyone being fed. There were leftovers – twelve baskets full! This shows us that God doesn’t just give us enough; He gives us more than enough. When we share what we have, even if it seems small, God can use it to bless others in amazing ways. It could be donating clothes we no longer wear, offering our time to a charity, or simply sharing a kind word. Remember, even a small seed can grow into a big harvest.

A Prayer for Us All:

Dear God,

Thank you for your love and for always being there for us. Help us to be kind to others, even when we’re going through hard times. Give us the courage to trust you, especially when things seem impossible. Show us how we can use our gifts to help those in need. And may we always be amazed by your generosity and abundance in our lives.

Amen.

The takeaway? God is always with us, ready to provide. Let’s choose kindness, trust in His plan, and be willing to share what we have. When we do, we’ll not only experience God’s blessings ourselves, but we’ll also be a blessing to others.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
