Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:24-28 NRSVCE

In Matthew 16:24-28, Jesus paints a picture of what it means to be his follower. It’s not a glamorous picture – it involves self-denial, sacrifice, and even carrying a cross. But it’s also a picture of true life, a life that lasts beyond this world.

The Surprising Joy of Saying No:

Imagine you’ve got a bad habit you know isn’t good for you. Maybe it’s too much screen time, unhealthy eating, or even a toxic relationship. Jesus says that following him means saying “no” to those things that hold us back from living our best lives. It’s not always easy, but when we deny ourselves those temporary pleasures, we open up space for something far greater. It’s like decluttering a room to create a peaceful haven.

The Treasure We Can’t Lose:

This life can feel like a constant chase for more – more money, more possessions, more status. But Jesus asks a powerful question: “What good is it to gain the whole world, yet forfeit your soul?” Our souls, our true selves, are the most valuable things we have. Following Jesus means investing in that eternal treasure. It might mean volunteering at a homeless shelter instead of splurging on a shopping spree, or spending time in prayer instead of endlessly scrolling through social media. When we lose ourselves in serving others and connecting with God, we actually find our true purpose and identity.

Living for What Truly Matters:

In today’s world, we’re bombarded with messages telling us to focus on the here and now. But Jesus invites us to think bigger, to think beyond this lifetime. He promises a future where those who follow him will be rewarded. This doesn’t mean ignoring our present responsibilities. It means living with a bigger perspective, knowing that our actions have eternal consequences. It’s like planting seeds that will bear fruit long after we’re gone.

The Hope of a New Beginning:

Jesus doesn’t just talk about death; he talks about coming back in glory. This gives us hope for a future where pain, suffering, and injustice will be no more. It’s a reminder that this life isn’t the end. When we face challenges, we can hold onto the promise of a new beginning, a world where God’s love and justice reign supreme.

A Prayer for a Life Well Lived:

Jesus, give us the strength to say “no” to those things that keep us from following you wholeheartedly. Help us to see the true value of our souls and to invest in the things that last. Open our eyes to your eternal perspective, that we might live for what truly matters. And fill us with hope for the future, knowing that you are coming again to make all things new. Amen.

Remember: Following Jesus isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily choice. It’s about surrendering our own desires and embracing his plan for our lives. It’s about finding true joy, purpose, and a hope that extends beyond this world. The path may seem upside down at times, but it’s the only path that leads to true life.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
