Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:1-5, 10-14 NRSVCE

In Matthew 18:1-5 and 10-14, Jesus challenges our understanding of greatness and shows us how deeply God cares about each one of us. It’s like a gentle reminder that true strength comes from humility and that no one is ever truly lost in God’s eyes.

Real Power Looks Different in God’s Kingdom

Imagine a group of adults arguing over who’s the most important. That’s basically what Jesus’ disciples were doing. But instead of giving them a list of impressive qualities, Jesus brought in a child. He said, “Unless you become like this little child, you’ll never truly understand God’s kingdom.” It’s a humbling lesson. In God’s world, it’s not about power, money, or fame. It’s about childlike trust, openness, and a willingness to depend on God.

  • Think about how kids approach life – they’re curious, forgiving, and full of wonder. We can learn a lot from them! Maybe it means letting go of the need to always be in control or admitting when we’re wrong. It could be about finding joy in simple things, like a beautiful sunset or a good conversation. When we embrace humility, we open our hearts to God’s grace.

God’s Relentless Love for the Lost

Jesus then tells a story about a shepherd who leaves his 99 sheep to find the one that’s wandered off. He’s overjoyed when he finds it! It’s a beautiful image of God’s love for us. No matter how far we stray, no matter how many mistakes we make, God never stops searching for us.

  • We’ve all felt lost at times, like we’re wandering in the wilderness. Maybe it’s a season of doubt, a struggle with addiction, or a time when we’ve turned away from God. This story reminds us that God never gives up on us. He’s always there, ready to welcome us back with open arms. And when we return, the celebration in heaven is bigger than we could ever imagine.

A Prayer for Humility and Hope:

Jesus, thank you for showing us that true greatness is found in humility. Help us to become more like children, trusting you completely and letting go of our pride. When we feel lost or alone, remind us of the shepherd who searches tirelessly for his sheep. May we always know the depth of your love, and may we share that love with others who are searching for their way home. Amen.

Remember: God sees your heart. He knows your struggles, your doubts, and your fears. But he also knows your potential, your worth, and your unique place in his story. Embrace humility, trust in his relentless love, and let him guide you back home.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
