Daily Gospel Reading: John 6:60-69 NRSVCE
In John 6:60-69, we witness a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. His teachings about being the “bread of life,” requiring his followers to eat his flesh and drink his blood, are hard to swallow – literally and figuratively. Many of his disciples find these words too difficult, too strange. This scene reminds us that following Jesus isn’t always easy; it requires faith even when things don’t make immediate sense.
Wrestling with Difficult Truths
Imagine being told something that completely challenges your understanding of the world. It’s like being asked to believe that the earth is flat when you’ve always known it’s round. That’s how some of Jesus’ followers felt. His teachings weren’t just about morality; they were about a deep, spiritual connection with him that seemed impossible to grasp.
- We all face situations that test our faith. Maybe it’s a scientific discovery that seems to contradict our beliefs, a personal tragedy that shakes our trust in God, or even a teaching in the Bible that’s hard to understand. These moments can leave us feeling confused, frustrated, or even angry. But this passage reminds us that it’s okay to wrestle with difficult truths. Faith isn’t about blind acceptance; it’s about seeking understanding and trusting in God even when we don’t have all the answers.
God Sees Your Heart
Jesus knew his disciples were struggling. He asked them, “Does this offend you?” It’s a gentle invitation to be honest about our doubts and questions. Jesus doesn’t want us to pretend; he wants us to come to him with our whole hearts, even the messy parts.
- Think about a time you’ve felt misunderstood or judged. Maybe it was by a friend, a family member, or even a religious leader. Jesus offers us a different kind of relationship. He sees our struggles, our questions, and our fears. He invites us to bring them to him in prayer, trusting that he’ll meet us with compassion and grace.
The Crossroads of Faith:
Many of Jesus’ disciples walked away that day. They weren’t ready for the challenge, the mystery, the surrender that following him required. It’s a sobering reminder that faith isn’t just about warm feelings or easy answers. It’s about making a choice, even when it’s difficult.
- We all face those crossroads moments in life. Maybe it’s a decision about a job, a relationship, or even how we spend our time. Will we choose the easy path or the one that leads to deeper meaning and purpose, even if it’s less comfortable?
4. The Anchor in the Storm:
In the midst of the turmoil, Peter makes a bold declaration: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” It’s a statement of unwavering faith. Even when things are confusing or difficult, Peter recognizes that Jesus is the source of true life and hope.
- Imagine being caught in a storm at sea. The waves are crashing, the wind is howling, and you’re afraid. But then you see a lighthouse in the distance, a steady beacon of light guiding you to safety. That’s what Jesus offers us – a firm anchor in the midst of life’s storms.
A Prayer for Unshakable Faith:
Jesus, when we’re faced with difficult teachings or challenging circumstances, help us to hold onto you. Give us the courage to ask questions, to wrestle with doubts, and to seek understanding. May we always remember that you are the source of true life, and that your love is stronger than any storm we face. Amen.
Remember: Faith isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about trusting the One who does. When we face challenges or difficult teachings, may we, like Peter, hold fast to Jesus, the anchor of our souls.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
