Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 7:1-10 NRSVCE

In Luke 7:1-10, we meet a Roman centurion, a man in charge of soldiers. You might think he’d be tough and arrogant, but he’s actually incredibly humble. His servant is sick, and he begs Jesus for help. What’s amazing is that he doesn’t even think Jesus needs to come to his house; he believes that just a word from Jesus is enough to heal.

Faith That Surprises Even Jesus

This story challenges our assumptions. We might expect faith to come from religious people or those who are familiar with God. But here, it’s a Roman soldier, someone from a different culture and background, who shows remarkable trust in Jesus.

  • It’s like seeing a tough, tattooed biker gently helping an elderly person cross the street. It reminds us that faith can blossom in unexpected places, and that God’s love isn’t limited to any one group or stereotype.

Humility That Opens Doors

The centurion doesn’t demand anything from Jesus. He recognizes his own unworthiness and simply asks for help. This humility is key. It’s like admitting you don’t have all the answers and being willing to ask for directions. When we approach God with that same humility, acknowledging our need for Him, we open ourselves up to His grace and power.

  • Think about a time when you’ve had to swallow your pride and ask for help. It might have been admitting you were wrong in an argument, seeking advice from a mentor, or even praying for strength when you felt weak. Those moments of humility can be turning points in our lives, leading us to deeper faith and greater connection with God.

The Power of Belief

The centurion believes that Jesus’ words alone can bring healing. It’s a reminder that faith isn’t just about intellectual understanding; it’s about trusting in God’s power, even when we can’t see the immediate results.

  • Imagine you’re planting a seed in the ground. You can’t see the roots growing or the flower blooming, but you trust that with time and care, it will blossom. Faith is like that – it’s trusting that God is at work, even when we can’t see the evidence yet.

A Prayer for Deeper Faith

God, help us to have the kind of faith that moves mountains. May we trust in your power, even when things seem impossible. Teach us humility, that we may always recognize our need for you. Open our hearts to your love and grace, that we may experience the fullness of your blessings. Amen.

Remember: Faith isn’t about having all the answers or fitting a certain mold. It’s about trusting in God’s love and power, even when we don’t fully understand. May we, like the centurion, approach God with humility and openness, allowing Him to work miracles in our lives and in the world around us.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
