Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 8:1-3 NRSVCE
Luke 8:1-3 offers a glimpse into the diverse group that traveled with Jesus, including several women who had been healed by him. It’s a picture of radical inclusivity and the transformative power of gratitude, reminding us that everyone has a place in God’s kingdom and a role to play in His work.
Breaking the Mold:
Imagine a world where women were often seen as second-class citizens, their voices silenced and their contributions overlooked. That was the reality in Jesus’ time. But he defied social norms by including women as part of his inner circle. It’s a powerful reminder that God’s love extends to all, regardless of gender, background, or past experiences.
- Think about those times when you’ve felt excluded or underestimated because of who you are or where you come from. Jesus welcomes everyone into his kingdom, valuing your unique gifts and contributions.
Gratitude in Action:
The women who followed Jesus weren’t just fans; they were actively involved in his ministry, supporting him financially and practically. Their generosity stemmed from a deep sense of gratitude for the healing and transformation they had experienced.
- Think about a time when someone helped you in a meaningful way. Did you feel a desire to pay it forward, to express your gratitude through acts of service? That’s the kind of response Jesus inspires in us. When we recognize the blessings we’ve received, it motivates us to share those blessings with others.
Using What You Have:
These women used their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples. It wasn’t about grand gestures or extravagant displays; it was about using what they had, no matter how small, to further God’s work.
- We all have something to offer, whether it’s our time, our talents, or our financial resources. It might be volunteering at a local soup kitchen, using your artistic skills to create something beautiful for your church, or simply offering a listening ear to a friend in need. Every act of service, no matter how small, makes a difference.
Unity in Diversity:
The women who followed Jesus came from all walks of life. Some were wealthy, some were ordinary, and some had overcome great challenges. But they found common ground in their love for Jesus and their desire to serve him.
- Our churches and communities should be reflections of this diversity. We all have different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, but we’re united in our faith in Christ. When we embrace our differences and work together, we create a beautiful tapestry that reflects God’s love for all.
A Prayer for Inclusive Service:
God, thank you for the example of these women who followed Jesus and supported his ministry. Help us to recognize the value of every person, regardless of their background or circumstances. May our gratitude for your love inspire us to serve others generously and to create inclusive communities where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Amen.
Remember: You have a unique role to play in God’s kingdom. Your gifts and talents matter, and your acts of service, no matter how small, can make a big difference. Let’s follow the example of these women, using what we have to support God’s work and to build a more inclusive and loving community.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
