Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:9-13 NRSVCE

In Matthew 9:9-13, we see Jesus doing something that shocked the religious folks of his day: he invites Matthew, a tax collector, to become one of his followers. Tax collectors were despised back then, seen as greedy and dishonest. It’s like a popular kid inviting the outcast to sit at their lunch table – totally unexpected and a bit scandalous. This story shows us that Jesus’ love breaks down barriers and welcomes everyone, no matter their past.

The Power of a Personal Invitation

Imagine getting a call from someone you admire, offering you a dream job or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You’d probably drop everything and say yes! That’s how Matthew reacted when Jesus simply said, “Follow me.” It’s a reminder that God’s invitation to us is personal and powerful.

  • We all long for a sense of purpose and belonging. Maybe you’ve felt stuck in a dead-end job, a toxic relationship, or a cycle of bad habits. Jesus’ call is an invitation to a new life, a chance to discover your true potential and find meaning in following Him.

A Table for Everyone

Jesus didn’t just invite Matthew; he also shared a meal with other tax collectors and “sinners” – people who were looked down upon by society. It’s like throwing a party and inviting the neighbors everyone else avoids. This shows us that God’s love isn’t exclusive; it’s open to all, regardless of their past mistakes or social status.

  • Think about those times when you’ve felt judged or excluded because of your background, your choices, or your struggles. Jesus welcomes everyone to his table, offering forgiveness, acceptance, and a fresh start.

Change, Not Just Rule-Following:

The religious leaders were upset that Jesus was hanging out with the “wrong” crowd. They were focused on following the rules, but Jesus was more interested in transforming hearts. It’s like cleaning the outside of a dirty cup while leaving the inside filthy. True change starts on the inside.

  • We can all fall into the trap of focusing on outward appearances – going to church, saying the right things, or trying to look “good” on the outside. But Jesus reminds us that God cares about our hearts, our motivations, and our willingness to change.

A Doctor for the Sick

Jesus said he came to call not the righteous, but sinners. It’s like a doctor who focuses on treating the sick, not those who are already healthy. Jesus came to heal our brokenness, to forgive our sins, and to offer us a new life.

  • We all need a doctor at some point in our lives. Whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual healing we need, Jesus is the ultimate physician. He doesn’t judge us for our ailments; He offers us compassion, healing, and a chance to start over.

A Prayer for Openness and Transformation:

Jesus, thank you for welcoming us just as we are, with all our flaws and imperfections. Help us to let go of the things that hold us back and to embrace your offer of new life. May we never judge others, but instead, show them the same compassion and acceptance that you’ve shown us. Amen.

Remember: God’s love is for everyone, no exceptions. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done, He’s waiting to welcome you with open arms.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
