Daily Gospel Reading: Mark 9:30-37 NRSVCE

In Mark 9:30-37, Jesus throws his disciples a curveball. They’re arguing about who’s the most important, and Jesus responds by putting a child in their midst. It’s a lesson that turns our ideas about leadership upside down. True greatness, Jesus teaches, isn’t about power or prestige; it’s about serving others with humility and welcoming those who are often overlooked.

The Fear of the Unknown

Before this scene, Jesus tells his disciples he’ll be betrayed, killed, and then rise again. They’re confused and scared, but no one dares to ask him about it. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? We face difficult situations – a health scare, a job loss, a broken relationship – and we’re afraid to ask the tough questions or face the unknown.

  • This story reminds us that it’s okay to have doubts and fears. But instead of letting them paralyze us, we can bring them to Jesus, trusting that he’ll guide us through the uncertainty.

The Competition Trap

The disciples were vying for the top spot, trying to prove their importance. It’s a trap we can easily fall into, whether it’s at work, in our social circles, or even in our families. We want to be recognized, appreciated, and seen as successful.

  • Think about those times when you’ve compared yourself to others, feeling envious or insecure. Jesus reminds us that true greatness isn’t about climbing the ladder of success; it’s about serving others with a humble heart.

Welcoming the Unexpected

Jesus uses a child as an example of true greatness. Children are often seen as insignificant, but Jesus says that welcoming them is like welcoming him. It’s a reminder that God’s kingdom isn’t about power or prestige; it’s about embracing the vulnerable and recognizing the value of every person.

  • Think about those times when you’ve felt overlooked or underestimated. Or perhaps you’ve been the one to overlook someone else, judging them based on their appearance or social status. Jesus calls us to see others through his eyes, with compassion and a willingness to welcome them into our lives.

Leadership as Service

Jesus’ message is clear: the greatest among us are those who serve. It’s a challenge to our natural desire for power and recognition. True leaders aren’t those who boss others around; they’re the ones who roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty, putting the needs of others first.

  • Think about the leaders you admire most – are they the ones who demand respect, or the ones who earn it through their humility and service? Jesus calls us to be the latter, to lead with love, compassion, and a servant’s heart.

A Prayer for Humble Hearts:

Jesus, teach us to lead like you, with humility and a servant’s heart. Help us to see the value in every person, especially those who are often overlooked. May our lives be marked by compassion, generosity, and a willingness to put the needs of others before our own. Amen.

Remember: True greatness isn’t about what you achieve, but about how you serve. Let’s embrace Jesus’ call to humility and welcome, and make a difference in the world by following his example of servant leadership.

May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
