Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 8:19-21 NRSVCE
In Luke 8:19-21, we catch a glimpse of a surprising scene: Jesus’ own family tries to see him, but he’s surrounded by a crowd. When he’s told they’re waiting, he doesn’t rush to greet them. Instead, he points to his disciples and says, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” It’s a powerful statement about the importance of spiritual connection and the family we find in faith.
Family Beyond Biology
Think about the people you consider family. It might not just be those related by blood. Maybe it’s a close friend who’s always there for you, a mentor who’s guided you through tough times, or a church community that feels like home. Jesus is reminding us that our spiritual family can be just as important, if not more so, than our biological one.
- We all have those people who feel like family, even if we’re not related. They’re the ones who know us deeply, who love us unconditionally, and who challenge us to grow. This passage encourages us to cherish those connections and to invest in building strong relationships within our faith community.
Faith That Walks the Talk
Jesus doesn’t just say that his followers are like family; he emphasizes that they “hear God’s word and put it into practice.” It’s not enough to just talk about faith; it’s about living it out in our daily lives.
- Imagine someone who constantly talks about their healthy lifestyle but never exercises or eats right. Their words ring hollow, right? In the same way, our faith needs to be more than just words; it needs to be reflected in our actions, our attitudes, and our relationships.
Putting God First
Jesus’ statement might seem a bit harsh to his earthly family, but it’s a reminder that our relationship with God should be our top priority. It’s like a parent whose child is about to walk for the first time. They might be talking to a friend, but their attention is laser-focused on their child, ready to catch them if they fall.
- We all have competing demands in our lives – work, family, hobbies, social commitments. It’s easy to let those things crowd out our time with God. This passage challenges us to make our relationship with Him the centerpiece of our lives, allowing it to shape everything else we do.
A Welcoming Community:
Jesus’ words create a sense of belonging. He’s not just building a following; he’s creating a family where everyone is welcome, regardless of their background or past mistakes.
- Think about a time when you’ve felt welcomed and accepted into a group, whether it’s a sports team, a club, or a church community. It’s a powerful feeling, knowing you have a place where you belong. Jesus invites us to be part of his family, a place where we can grow, learn, and support each other on our faith journey.
A Prayer for Spiritual Family
God, thank you for the gift of spiritual family. Help us to deepen our connections with those who share our faith and to create a community where everyone feels loved and accepted. May our lives reflect your teachings, that we may truly be your brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.
Remember: You’re not alone on this journey. God has placed people in your life who can encourage you, challenge you, and walk alongside you. Cherish those relationships, and together, let’s build a strong spiritual family that honors God and reflects His love to the world.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
