Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 9:18-22 NRSVCE
In Luke 9:18-22, we find Jesus asking his closest friends a crucial question: “Who do you say I am?” It’s a question that echoes through the ages, challenging us to define our own relationship with Jesus. Peter’s bold answer, “The Messiah of God,” reveals his growing understanding of Jesus’ true identity. But Jesus’ next words throw them all for a loop – he’s going to suffer, be killed, and rise again. This passage isn’t just about a conversation from long ago; it’s about the core of our faith and how we respond when our expectations are turned upside down.
Finding Your Own Answer
Think about a time when you’ve been asked a tough question, one that really made you think. Maybe it was in a job interview, a relationship conversation, or even a quiet moment of self-reflection. Jesus’ question is like that. It’s not just about repeating what others say; it’s about discovering your own personal truth.
- We all have different experiences and perspectives on faith. Some of us grew up in church, while others came to faith later in life. Some have a strong, unwavering belief, while others wrestle with doubts and questions. This passage encourages us to take ownership of our faith, to explore what Jesus means to us personally, and to articulate our own understanding of who He is.
When Expectations Crumble
Imagine planning a dream vacation, only to have it canceled at the last minute. Or envision working towards a promotion, only to see it go to someone else. It’s disappointing, even devastating. The disciples experienced a similar shock when Jesus talked about his upcoming suffering and death. They expected a triumphant Messiah, not one who would face rejection and crucifixion.
- We all face those moments when life doesn’t go according to plan. It’s easy to feel disillusioned or even angry with God. But this passage reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours. His plan might not always align with our expectations, but we can trust that He’s working for our good, even in the midst of pain and suffering.
The Cost of Following Jesus
Jesus didn’t sugarcoat the reality of discipleship. He told his followers that they, too, would face challenges and sacrifices if they chose to follow him. It’s a sobering reminder that faith isn’t always easy; it requires courage, perseverance, and a willingness to put God’s will above our own comfort.
- Think about a time when you’ve had to make a difficult choice for the sake of your faith – maybe it was standing up for what’s right even when it was unpopular, or forgiving someone who hurt you deeply. These choices might not be easy, but they lead to a deeper, more authentic faith.
A Prayer for Courageous Faith:
Jesus, when our faith is challenged and our expectations are shattered, help us to hold onto you. Give us the courage to follow you, even when the path is difficult. May we trust in your plan, even when we don’t understand it. Strengthen us to live lives that reflect your love and grace, no matter the cost. Amen.
Remember: Faith isn’t about having all the answers or a perfect life. It’s about trusting Jesus, even when things don’t make sense. It’s about choosing to follow Him, even when it’s hard. And it’s about finding hope and strength in His promises, even in the darkest of times.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
