Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 9:46-50 NRSVCE
In Luke 9:46-50, we catch Jesus’ disciples in a rather awkward moment. They’re arguing about who among them is the greatest. It’s like a group of friends debating who’s the most popular or who has the best job. But Jesus flips the script, showing them that true greatness isn’t about status or power; it’s about humble service and a willingness to lift up others.
The Comparison Trap:
We all fall into the comparison trap sometimes. We scroll through social media, seeing everyone else’s highlight reel, and we start to feel inadequate. Or we compare our accomplishments to those of our peers, wondering if we’re measuring up. But Jesus offers a different perspective.
- Think about a time when you’ve helped someone in need, maybe a friend who was struggling or a stranger on the street. Did it make you feel good? That’s the kind of greatness Jesus is talking about – not the kind that seeks the spotlight, but the kind that shines a light on others.
Welcoming the Unseen
Jesus places a child in the midst of his disciples, saying that whoever welcomes a child welcomes him. Children were often overlooked in that culture, but Jesus elevates their importance. It’s a reminder that God’s kingdom isn’t about power or prestige; it’s about embracing those who are often marginalized or forgotten.
- We all know what it’s like to feel unseen or unheard. Maybe it’s the quiet kid in class, the elderly neighbor who lives alone, or the person struggling with addiction. Jesus calls us to see them, to welcome them, and to offer them the same love and respect we’d give to anyone else.
Unity in the Mission
When John tells Jesus about someone casting out demons in his name, even though he wasn’t part of their group, Jesus responds with a powerful statement: “Whoever is not against us is for us.” It’s a call for unity and collaboration, recognizing that God’s work isn’t limited to a specific group or denomination.
- Imagine a group of people working together to clean up a polluted river. Some might be environmental activists, others might be church members, and some might simply be concerned citizens. They might have different approaches, but they’re united in their goal of making a positive impact. That’s the kind of unity Jesus desires for his followers.
A Prayer for Humble Service:
God, help us to let go of the need to be the best and to focus on serving others with humility. Open our eyes to the needs of those around us, and give us the courage to reach out with love and compassion. May we work together, united in your mission, to bring hope and healing to the world. Amen.
Remember: True greatness isn’t about being on top; it’s about lifting others up. When we embrace humility, welcome the marginalized, and work together in service to God, we discover the true joy and fulfillment that comes from being part of His kingdom.
May God bless you all, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
