Daily Gospel Reading: Mark 10:2-12 NRSVCE

In Mark 10:2-12, Jesus tackles a tough topic: divorce.  Some religious leaders try to trap him with a question about whether it’s okay to end a marriage. But Jesus doesn’t get caught up in legal loopholes. Instead, he takes them back to the beginning, reminding them that God created marriage to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman. It’s a powerful message that challenges our modern views on relationships and calls us to a higher standard of commitment.

More Than Just a Piece of Paper

Think about those couples who’ve been married for decades, their love weathering the storms of life.  Their bond isn’t just a legal contract; it’s a deep, abiding connection that’s become part of who they are.  That’s the kind of marriage Jesus is talking about. It’s a sacred union, a reflection of God’s own love for us.

We live in a world where relationships often feel disposable. It’s easy to walk away when things get tough. But Jesus reminds us that marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment, a journey of growth, forgiveness, and unwavering love.

The Hardening of Our Hearts

Jesus acknowledges that divorce happens, but he points out that it’s not what God intended. It’s like a beautiful garden that’s been neglected and overrun with weeds.  Divorce often stems from hardened hearts – bitterness, unforgiveness, a refusal to work through difficulties.

We’ve all felt those hard edges in our own hearts – the anger that lingers after an argument, the pride that prevents us from apologizing, the hurt that keeps us from forgiving. Jesus calls us to soften our hearts, to choose love and grace over bitterness. This doesn’t mean ignoring problems; it means facing them with a willingness to heal and rebuild.

The High Cost of Broken Promises

Jesus’ words about remarriage after divorce are strong. He calls it adultery, highlighting the seriousness of breaking the marriage covenant. It’s a reminder that our vows aren’t just empty words; they’re sacred promises before God.

Think about a time when someone broke a promise to you. It probably hurt, didn’t it? It eroded trust and damaged the relationship. Jesus is saying that breaking our marriage vows has serious consequences, not just for ourselves but for our relationship with God.

A Prayer for Stronger Marriages:

Lord Jesus, we live in a world where relationships are often fragile and fleeting.  Help us to see marriage as you intended it to be – a sacred bond, a lifelong commitment, a reflection of your love.  Give us the grace to soften our hearts, to forgive freely, and to love unconditionally.  May our marriages be a source of strength, joy, and a testament to your faithfulness. Amen.

Remember: Marriage is a precious gift, a sacred journey. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth fighting for.  Let’s strive to build marriages that honor God, reflect His love, and stand the test of time.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
