Saint of the Day: October 20, 2024
Imagine a young man so moved by the Passion of Christ that he dedicates his entire life to spreading its message. That was St. Paul of the Cross, a fiery preacher and founder of the Passionists, a religious order dedicated to keeping the memory of Jesus’ suffering and love alive.
A Visionary from the Start:
Even as a child, Paul experienced a powerful vision that set him on his life’s path. He saw himself and his future companions clothed in a unique habit, a symbol of their dedication to the Passion of Christ. This early encounter with the divine ignited a fire within him, fueling his unwavering commitment to sharing the story of Jesus’ sacrifice with the world.
Building a Community of Passion:
Paul’s vision didn’t stop with personal devotion. He sought guidance from his bishop and, with unwavering determination, founded the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (the Passionists). Despite facing initial setbacks, he persevered, eventually gaining approval from the Pope to establish his order. His leadership and vision created a community dedicated to preaching and living the message of the Passion.
A Humble Servant, a Tireless Missionary:
For over fifty years, St. Paul tirelessly traveled throughout Italy, preaching the Passion with fervor and compassion. He founded numerous monasteries, nurturing communities of faith and devotion. Yet, despite his accomplishments, he remained humble, considering himself a “useless servant” and a “great sinner.” His humility reminds us that true greatness lies not in self-promotion, but in recognizing our dependence on God’s grace.
A Legacy of Love and Sacrifice:
St. Paul of the Cross’s legacy extends far beyond his lifetime. His Passionist order continues to thrive, carrying on his mission of spreading the message of Christ’s love and sacrifice. His feast day on October 20th is a celebration of a life dedicated to sharing the story of the Passion and inspiring others to embrace a life of faith and service.
In a world often distracted by fleeting pleasures and superficial pursuits, St. Paul of the Cross’s example challenges us to focus on the essential truths of our faith. His story reminds us that true fulfillment lies in surrendering to God’s will and dedicating our lives to serving others.
May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
