Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 6:12-16 NRSVCE

In Luke 6:12-16, we get a behind-the-scenes look at a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry: choosing his twelve apostles. It’s like a coach assembling their dream team or a CEO handpicking their top executives. But Jesus doesn’t just choose the most popular or talented people; he spends an entire night in prayer, seeking God’s guidance in this important decision.

1. The Power of Prayer in Decision-Making

Imagine you’re facing a major life choice – a career change, a relationship decision, or a big move. It can feel overwhelming, right? Jesus shows us the importance of taking those decisions to God in prayer. He doesn’t rely on his own wisdom or popularity polls; he seeks his Father’s will.

  • We all have those moments when we need guidance and direction. This passage reminds us that prayer isn’t just about asking for things; it’s about connecting with God, listening to his voice, and aligning our hearts with his plan.

2. Diversity Matters

The twelve apostles weren’t all the same. They came from different backgrounds, had different personalities, and even had different political views. But Jesus chose them specifically because of their unique strengths and perspectives.

  • Think about your own circle of friends or your workplace. Diversity makes things more interesting and productive, doesn’t it? Different perspectives can lead to better solutions, greater creativity, and a stronger sense of community. Jesus’ team reminds us to value the unique contributions of every person.

3. Even Judas Was Chosen

One of the twelve apostles was Judas Iscariot, the one who would eventually betray Jesus. It’s a reminder that even those closest to us can make bad choices. But it also shows us that God’s plan is bigger than our mistakes.

  • We all have those moments when we feel like we’ve messed up, like we’re not worthy of God’s love or forgiveness. This passage reminds us that God can use even our failures for his purposes. He doesn’t give up on us, even when we make mistakes.

4. Building a Foundation that Lasts

The twelve apostles became the foundation of the early church. They spread the good news of Jesus, built communities of faith, and passed on their teachings to future generations. It’s a reminder that our actions today can have a lasting impact on the world.

  • Think about the people who have influenced your life – your parents, teachers, mentors, or friends. Their words and actions have shaped who you are today. This passage encourages us to build a legacy of faith, to invest in the lives of others, and to leave a positive mark on the world.

A Prayer for Guidance and Purpose:

God, thank you for the example of Jesus and the way he chose his team. Help us to seek your guidance in every decision we make, to value the diversity of those around us, and to use our gifts and talents to build your kingdom. May our lives make a difference for eternity. Amen.

Remember: You are part of God’s team. He’s chosen you, equipped you, and given you a unique role to play in his plan. Let’s embrace our callings, serve others with love, and build a legacy that honors God and impacts the world for good.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
