Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 14:25-33 NRSVCE

In Luke 14:25-33, Jesus doesn’t sugarcoat the truth about what it means to be his follower. He talks about hating your family (not literally, of course!), carrying a cross, and giving up all your possessions. It sounds intense, right? But Jesus isn’t trying to scare people away; he’s inviting them to count the cost, to make a conscious and committed decision to follow him.

1. Who Comes First?

Imagine you’re planning a special dinner with your family, but then your best friend calls, needing your help with an emergency. Who do you prioritize? Jesus uses strong language to emphasize that our love for God should be our ultimate priority, even above our closest relationships.

  • We all have those people and things we love dearly – our families, our friends, our possessions, our dreams. This passage challenges us to examine our hearts. Are we willing to put God first, even when it means making difficult choices or sacrifices?

2. The Cross We Carry

Jesus talks about carrying a cross. It’s a powerful image of the challenges and sacrifices that come with following him. It’s not about seeking out suffering; it’s about being willing to endure hardship for the sake of our faith.

  • Think about a time when you’ve faced a difficult situation – a health issue, a financial setback, a broken relationship. Those experiences can feel like a heavy cross to bear. But this passage reminds us that Jesus is with us in our struggles, offering strength, comfort, and hope.

3. Building on a Solid Foundation

Jesus uses the analogy of building a tower. You wouldn’t start construction without first making sure you have enough resources to finish the job, would you? In the same way, we need to count the cost of following Jesus, to understand the commitment it requires, and to be prepared for the challenges ahead.

  • Think about a time when you started a project without thinking it through, and it ended up being more difficult or expensive than you expected. This passage encourages us to approach our faith with intentionality, to be prepared for the long haul, and to build our lives on a solid foundation of faith.

4. Freedom from Possessions

Jesus talks about giving up all our possessions. It’s a radical statement, but it’s about more than just money. It’s about recognizing that our true worth isn’t found in what we own, but in who we are in Christ.

  • Imagine feeling weighed down by all the stuff you have – the clutter in your home, the debt you’re carrying, the constant desire for more. This passage invites us to simplify our lives, to detach from material possessions, and to find freedom in following Jesus.

A Prayer for Committed Discipleship:

Jesus, help us to count the cost of following you. Give us the courage to prioritize you above all else, to embrace the challenges, and to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with you. May our lives be a testament to your love and grace. Amen.

Remember: Following Jesus isn’t always easy, but it’s the most rewarding journey we can take. It’s a journey of transformation, of letting go of the things that hold us back, and of discovering true freedom and purpose in Him.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
