Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 16:1-8 NRSVCE

In Luke 16:1-8, Jesus tells a story that might seem a bit odd at first. It’s about a manager who’s about to get fired, so he quickly cuts deals with his master’s debtors to make friends and secure his future. While we don’t condone dishonesty, Jesus uses this story to teach us an important lesson: we need to be wise and strategic when it comes to our faith and our lives.

1. Making the Most of What You Have

The manager in the story is resourceful. He’s in a tough spot, but he thinks quickly and uses his skills to find a solution. It’s a reminder that God has given each of us unique talents and abilities. We need to use them wisely, not just for our own benefit, but for the good of others and the advancement of God’s kingdom.

  • Think about your own skills and talents. Maybe you’re good with numbers, a gifted communicator, or a natural leader. How can you use those gifts to serve others, to make a difference in your community, or to share God’s love with the world?

2. Wise as Serpents, Innocent as Doves

Jesus praises the dishonest manager for being “shrewd.” He’s not condoning the manager’s dishonesty, but he’s highlighting the importance of being wise and discerning in a world that’s often challenging and complex.

  • We all face situations where we need to make smart choices. It might be navigating a difficult relationship, making a financial decision, or even choosing the right path for our lives. This passage encourages us to seek wisdom, to be thoughtful and strategic, and to make decisions that align with our values and God’s will.

3. Investing in Eternity

The manager in the story was focused on securing his earthly future. But Jesus calls us to a higher purpose – investing in eternity. It’s about making choices that have lasting value, not just temporary gain.

  • Imagine you’re given a choice between a small, immediate reward and a much larger, delayed reward. Which would you choose? This passage reminds us to keep our eyes on the eternal prize, to make decisions that will have a lasting impact, and to store up treasures in heaven, not just on earth.

A Prayer for Wisdom and Purpose:

God, give us the wisdom to live our lives with purpose and intentionality. Help us to be resourceful, to use our gifts and talents wisely, and to make choices that honor you and reflect your kingdom. May our lives be an investment in eternity, making a difference that lasts beyond this world. Amen.

Remember: You have been given unique gifts and opportunities. Use them wisely, not just for your own benefit, but to serve others and to build God’s kingdom. Live with eternity in mind, and make choices that will have a lasting impact.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
