Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 17:7-10 NRSVCE

In Luke 17:7-10, Jesus tells a story about a servant who comes in from a long day of work in the fields. Instead of being offered a meal and a rest, the master tells him to prepare dinner first. It seems a bit unfair, doesn’t it? But Jesus uses this story to teach us an important lesson about serving with humility and gratitude.

1. Doing What Needs to Be Done

Think about those times when you’ve had to do a chore you didn’t enjoy – maybe cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, or helping with a project at work. You might have grumbled or complained, but you did it anyway because it needed to be done. That’s the attitude Jesus is talking about.

  • We all have responsibilities in life, whether it’s taking care of our families, fulfilling our work duties, or serving in our communities. This passage reminds us that true service isn’t about seeking praise or recognition; it’s about doing what needs to be done with a willing heart.

2. Beyond Expectations

Jesus asks, “Do you thank the servant for doing what was commanded?” The answer is obviously no! The servant is simply doing his job. In the same way, we shouldn’t expect a pat on the back every time we do something good or fulfill our responsibilities.

  • We often crave recognition and appreciation for our efforts. But Jesus challenges us to go beyond that, to serve out of love and obedience to God, not for the praise of others.

3. “I’m Just Doing My Job”

Jesus tells his disciples to say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.” It’s a powerful statement of humility. It’s recognizing that everything we have, every talent and ability, comes from God.

  • Imagine a musician who receives a standing ovation after a concert. They might feel proud of their performance, but they also acknowledge the years of practice, the support of their teachers, and the gift of their musical talent. In the same way, we can acknowledge our accomplishments while recognizing that they’re ultimately made possible by God’s grace.

4. The Power of Gratitude

This passage isn’t just about humility; it’s also about gratitude. When we recognize that everything we have is a gift from God, it fills our hearts with thankfulness. And gratitude leads to joy, contentment, and a deeper connection with God.

  • Think about a time when someone expressed sincere gratitude to you. It probably made you feel appreciated and encouraged, didn’t it? In the same way, expressing our gratitude to God deepens our relationship with Him and reminds us of His faithfulness.

A Prayer for Humble Service:

God, help us to serve you and others with a humble and grateful heart. May we find joy in fulfilling our responsibilities, not seeking praise or recognition, but simply doing what is right and pleasing to you. Thank you for the gifts and opportunities you’ve given us, and may we use them to make a difference in the world. Amen.

Remember: True service isn’t about what we get out of it; it’s about what we give. Let’s embrace humility, practice gratitude, and serve others with a joyful heart, knowing that we’re ultimately serving God.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
