Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 17:26-37 NRSVCE
In Luke 17:26-37, Jesus talks about the end of the world. He compares it to the time of Noah, when people were going about their daily lives – eating, drinking, getting married – and then, bam! The flood came and swept them all away. He also mentions Lot, who escaped the destruction of Sodom but lost his wife because she looked back longingly at the city. This passage might seem scary, but it’s actually a wake-up call to live each day with purpose and intentionality, knowing that Jesus could return at any moment.
1. Life Can Change in an Instant
Think about a time when your life took an unexpected turn – maybe a sudden illness, a job loss, or a natural disaster. It can happen when you least expect it, shaking your world and changing your priorities. Jesus is saying that his return will be like that – sudden and unexpected.
- We often get caught up in the routines of daily life, thinking we have all the time in the world to get our spiritual lives in order. But this passage reminds us that life is unpredictable. We need to be ready for Jesus’ return, not just someday, but today.
2. Don’t Get Distracted by Stuff
Lot’s wife was warned not to look back at Sodom, but she couldn’t resist. She was attached to her possessions, her home, her life there. And it cost her everything. This is a powerful reminder that material things can hold us back from following Jesus wholeheartedly.
- We all have those things we cling to – our possessions, our comfort, our reputation. But Jesus challenges us to let go of those attachments and focus on what truly matters – our relationship with God and the eternal life He offers.
3. No Time to Waste
Jesus says that when he returns, there won’t be time to gather your belongings or go back for what you’ve left behind. It’s a call to urgency, to make the most of every opportunity to follow Him and share His love.
- Imagine you’re at a concert, and your favorite band is about to play your favorite song. You wouldn’t step out to get a snack or go to the bathroom, would you? You’d want to be present, to savor every moment. In the same way, we need to be fully present in our relationship with God, not putting off our spiritual growth or our service to others.
4. Choosing What Matters Most
Jesus paints a picture of people going about their daily lives when he returns. Some will be ready, and others will be caught off guard. It’s a reminder that our choices matter, not just in this life, but for eternity.
- Think about how you’re spending your time and energy. Are you investing in things that will last, or are you focused on the temporary pleasures of this world? This passage encourages us to make choices that reflect our faith, to prioritize our relationship with God, and to live each day with eternity in mind.
A Prayer for Readiness:
God, help us to live each day with a sense of urgency and purpose. May our hearts be focused on you, our lives a reflection of your love, and our actions a testament to your grace. Keep us alert and ready for your return, that we may be found faithful and prepared to enter your kingdom. Amen.
Remember: Jesus is coming back. We don’t know when, but we know He is. Let’s live each day with that in mind, making the most of every opportunity to love God, serve others, and share the good news of His kingdom.
May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
