Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 21:20-28 NRSVCE

In Luke 21:20-28, Jesus paints a picture of some pretty intense events. He talks about armies surrounding Jerusalem, wars, earthquakes, and even signs in the sun, moon, and stars. It’s like a disaster movie trailer! But amidst all the chaos, Jesus offers a message of hope: He’s coming back. This passage reminds us that even when the world seems to be falling apart, we can find comfort and strength in the promise of Jesus’ return.

1. Nothing Lasts Forever

Imagine building a sandcastle on the beach. It might look impressive for a while, but eventually, the tide will come in and wash it away. Jesus uses the example of Jerusalem’s destruction to remind us that everything in this world is temporary. Our possessions, our achievements, even our cities and nations will one day fade away.

  • We all experience loss and change in our lives. Maybe it’s a job loss, a broken relationship, or the passing of a loved one. This passage encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on the eternal, to invest in things that will last, and to find our security in God, not in the things of this world.

2. Tough Times Ahead

Jesus warns about difficult times – wars, natural disasters, and widespread suffering. It’s a sobering reminder that life isn’t always easy. We all face challenges, setbacks, and moments of despair.

  • Think about a time when you’ve gone through a storm in your life – a health crisis, a financial struggle, or a period of deep grief. It can feel like the world is crashing down around you. But this passage reminds us that Jesus is with us in the storm. He understands our pain, and He offers us hope and strength to endure.

3. Looking Up

Amidst all the chaos and destruction, Jesus tells his followers to “stand up and raise your heads.” Why? Because their redemption is drawing near. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, we can look up and find hope in Jesus’ return.

  • Imagine a sunflower that always turns its face towards the sun, even on a cloudy day. This passage encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the source of our hope and salvation. He’s coming back, and that promise gives us strength to face any challenge.

4. The Grand Finale

Jesus describes his return as a glorious event, filled with power and majesty. It’s like the grand finale of a fireworks show, the culmination of all that has come before. It’s a reminder that God’s plan is unfolding, and that ultimately, good will triumph over evil.

  • We all long for a happy ending, don’t we? This passage gives us a glimpse of that happy ending – a time when Jesus will return, make all things new, and wipe away every tear.

A Prayer for Hope and Readiness:

God, thank you for the promise of Jesus’ return. When we face challenges and uncertainties in this world, help us to keep our eyes fixed on you. Fill our hearts with hope, our minds with peace, and our lives with purpose. May we be ready to welcome Jesus with joy when He comes again. Amen.

Remember: The world might be a messy place, but God is in control. He has a plan, and it’s a plan of redemption and hope. Let’s live each day with that in mind, trusting in His promises and sharing His love with the world.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
