Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 4:18-22 NRSVCE

In Matthew 4:18-22, we see Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee, where he spots some fishermen – Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John. He calls out to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” And just like that, they drop their nets and follow him. It’s a powerful scene, a reminder that when Jesus calls, he calls us to something bigger than ourselves, something that can change our lives and the lives of others forever.

1. The Unexpected Invitation

Imagine you’re going about your daily routine – working, studying, taking care of your family. Then, out of the blue, you receive an invitation that changes everything. Maybe it’s a dream job offer, a chance to travel the world, or even a call to serve in a way you never imagined. That’s what these fishermen experienced. They were just doing their jobs, and then Jesus invites them to join his mission.

  • We all have those moments when life takes an unexpected turn. It could be a new relationship, a health challenge, or a career change. This passage reminds us to be open to God’s surprises, to listen for his voice, and to be ready to say “yes” when he calls us to something more.

2. Leaving the Familiar Behind

These fishermen didn’t just say, “Okay, we’ll follow you on the weekends.” They left their nets, their boats, even their families, to follow Jesus. It’s a picture of the sacrifices we sometimes have to make when we commit to following Christ.

  • Think about a time when you had to leave something familiar behind – maybe it was moving to a new city, starting a new job, or even ending a relationship that wasn’t healthy. It can be scary to step outside our comfort zones, but this passage reminds us that following Jesus often requires us to leave the familiar behind and embrace the unknown.

3. A New Kind of Fishing

Jesus promises to make these fishermen “fishers of people.” It’s a beautiful image of how God can take our ordinary skills and talents and use them for extraordinary purposes. He doesn’t just want us to catch fish; he wants us to share his love with the world and help others find their way back to him.

  • We all have gifts and passions that God can use to build his kingdom. Maybe you’re a gifted teacher, a compassionate listener, a talented artist, or a natural leader. This passage encourages us to discover our unique gifts and use them to serve others and share God’s love.

4. The Joy of Obedience

The fishermen immediately left everything and followed Jesus. It’s a picture of joyful obedience, a willingness to say “yes” to God’s call without hesitation. It’s not about blind obedience; it’s about trusting that God knows what’s best for us and that following him will lead to a life of purpose and fulfillment.

  • Think about a time when you’ve obeyed God, even when it was difficult or didn’t make sense at the time. Maybe it was forgiving someone who hurt you, helping someone in need, or making a tough decision that honored your faith. Those acts of obedience might not always be easy, but they often lead to a deeper sense of peace and joy.

A Prayer for a Willing Heart:

God, give us the courage to say “yes” to your call, even when it requires us to step outside our comfort zones or leave the familiar behind. Help us to discover our unique gifts and talents and to use them to serve you and to share your love with the world. May our lives be a reflection of your grace and a testament to the transformative power of your love. Amen.

Remember: God has a plan for your life, a purpose that’s bigger than you can imagine. When you hear his call, don’t hesitate. Follow him with all your heart, and he’ll lead you on an adventure that will change your life forever.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
