Daily Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:12-14 NRSVCE
In Matthew 18:12-14, Jesus tells a story about a shepherd who has 100 sheep. When one goes missing, he leaves the 99 to search for the lost one. And when he finds it, he’s overjoyed! This simple story reveals a powerful truth about God: He never gives up on us, no matter how far we’ve wandered or how lost we feel.
1. You Are Valued
Imagine a child who wanders away from their parents in a crowded store. They feel scared and alone, but their parents frantically search for them, never giving up until they’re reunited. That’s how God feels about us.
- We all have those moments when we feel lost, disconnected from God, or like we’ve messed up too badly to be forgiven. This story reminds us that we are precious to God. He sees our value, even when we don’t see it ourselves.
2. A Celebration in Heaven
Jesus says there’s more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who don’t need to repent. It’s like a family throwing a huge party to celebrate the return of a loved one who’s been missing for years.
- Think about a time when you’ve experienced the joy of reconciliation – maybe after a disagreement with a friend, a falling out with a family member, or even a time when you’ve felt distant from God and then reconnected with Him. That feeling of coming home is something God celebrates with all of heaven.
3. Leaving the 99
The shepherd’s willingness to leave the 99 sheep to search for the one shows us how much God cares about each individual. It’s a reminder that no one is insignificant in God’s eyes.
- Think about a teacher who notices a quiet student struggling in the back of the classroom. They take the time to help that student, to encourage them, and to see their potential. That’s how God sees us. He knows our struggles, our strengths, and our unique value in His kingdom.
4. A Shared Responsibility
While the shepherd takes the lead in searching for the lost sheep, the other sheep are still part of the flock. They might not be able to go out and search, but they can support the shepherd and welcome the lost sheep back with open arms.
- We all have a role to play in helping others find their way back to God. It might be through offering a listening ear, sharing our faith, or simply showing love and acceptance to those who are struggling.
A Prayer for the Lost and Found:
God, thank you for never giving up on us, even when we wander away. Help us to hear your voice calling us back to you. Fill us with the joy of your forgiveness and the assurance that we are loved and valued, no matter what. And give us the compassion to reach out to others who are lost, helping them find their way back to your loving embrace. Amen.
Remember: You are not lost in God’s eyes. He’s searching for you, He loves you, and He’s waiting to welcome you home with open arms.
May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.
Amen.
