Daily Gospel Reading: Luke 1:39-45 NRSVCE

In Luke 1:39-45, we see a beautiful encounter between two pregnant women, Mary and Elizabeth. Mary, carrying Jesus, travels to visit her relative Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. As soon as they greet each other, something amazing happens: the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy! It’s a moment of divine connection, a recognition that God is doing something extraordinary in their lives.

1. Finding Your Tribe

Imagine you’ve received some life-changing news – maybe you’re pregnant, you got a new job, or you’re facing a health challenge. You probably want to share it with someone you trust, someone who will understand and support you. That’s what Mary does. She goes to visit Elizabeth, knowing that she’ll find encouragement and understanding.

  • We all need those people in our lives – our tribe, our faith family, those who will celebrate with us in the good times and support us through the tough times. This passage reminds us to seek out those connections, to build relationships with people who share our faith and will encourage us on our journey.

2. Recognizing God at Work

Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognizes that Mary is carrying the Son of God. It’s a moment of awe and wonder, a glimpse of the miraculous. It’s a reminder that God is at work in our lives and in the lives of those around us, even when we don’t realize it.

  • Think about those times when you’ve seen God’s hand at work in your own life or in the lives of others – maybe it was an answered prayer, a timely encouragement, or a sense of peace in the midst of a storm. This passage encourages us to be attentive to those moments, to recognize God’s presence, and to celebrate His work in our lives.

3. Mutual Encouragement

Mary and Elizabeth bless each other, affirming their faith and their roles in God’s plan. It’s a beautiful picture of how we can encourage and support each other in our faith journeys.

  • We all need encouragement, don’t we? Whether it’s a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand, those acts of support can make a big difference in our lives. This passage reminds us to be a source of encouragement to others, to celebrate their victories, and to offer support in their struggles.

4. God With Us

The baby in Mary’s womb is Jesus, “Emmanuel,” which means “God with us.” It’s a reminder that we’re not alone in this journey. God is with us, through the ups and downs, the joys and sorrows, the triumphs and challenges.

  • Think about those times when you’ve felt God’s presence in a special way – maybe it was during a time of prayer, in a moment of natural beauty, or through the kindness of a stranger. This passage reminds us that God is always with us, even when we don’t realize it.

A Prayer for Community and Encouragement:

God, thank you for the gift of community and the people you’ve placed in our lives to support us on our faith journey. Help us to be a source of encouragement to others, to celebrate their victories, and to offer support in their struggles. May we always remember that you are with us, Emmanuel, guiding us and loving us every step of the way. Amen.

Remember: You’re not alone on this journey. God has placed people in your life who can encourage you, challenge you, and walk alongside you. Cherish those relationships, and together, let’s build a strong community that honors God and reflects His love to the world.

May God bless you as you share His love, and may His love guide you in every step you take.

Amen.
